You matched your flex to your swing speed exactly like the chart says. And your ball flight still isn't doing what you expected either ballooning up with too much spin, or coming out low and knuckling instead of climbing. Flex isn't lying to you. It's just not the only spec doing the work. There's a second one running quietly in the background that almost nobody asks about: kick point, sometimes called bend point. It's the spec that actually controls where your shot launches from and how much it spins, and it's a big part of why two shafts labeled the exact same flex can fly completely differently.

It happens more than golfers expect. You'd assume "Regular" means Regular, full stop. But flex only tells you how much a shaft resists bending overall — it doesn't tell you where along the shaft that bending actually happens. That "where" is kick point, and it changes the whole shape of your shot even when the flex label on the box is identical.

What kick point actually is

Picture the shaft loading and unloading during your downswing, like a diving board. Kick point is where along that "board" the most bending happens — closer to the grip, closer to the clubhead, or somewhere in the middle. That single detail changes how the clubhead is delivered to the ball at impact, which directly shapes launch angle and spin.

High kick point vs. low kick point

High kick point (the stiffer section sits closer to the grip, so more of the flex happens down near the tip) tends to produce a lower, more penetrating launch with less spin. It's often the better fit for golfers who already launch the ball plenty high on their own, or faster, more aggressive swingers who don't need help getting the ball airborne.

Low kick point (more flex happens closer to the clubhead) tends to produce a higher launch with more spin — genuinely useful for a golfer who struggles to get the ball up in the air, but it can go the other way fast: pair a low kick point with a swing that already launches high, and shots can balloon and lose distance instead of gaining it.

Mid kick point sits in between and is the most common all-around choice — a reasonable default when you don't have a specific launch problem to solve.

Here's the part flex alone can't explain: tempo, not just speed

Two golfers can share the exact same swing speed and still need different kick points, because kick point responds to tempo — how smoothly or aggressively you transition from backswing to downswing — not just to raw speed.

A golfer with a quick, aggressive transition tends to load a low-kick-point shaft harder and later, which can send spin numbers climbing past the point of helping you. A golfer with a smoother, more gradual tempo loads that same shaft more gently, so the same low kick point might be exactly what gets a flat ball flight up in the air. Same speed, same flex, different result — because tempo, not speed, is deciding how the kick point actually behaves in your hands.

Does kick point actually add distance?

Not directly, and it's worth being straight about that. Kick point doesn't make you swing faster or hit the ball harder — it changes dynamic loft, which is the effective loft the clubface presents at the moment of impact, shaped by how the shaft has bent coming into the ball. A lower kick point adds dynamic loft; a higher one takes it away.

Distance shows up as a side effect of that, not a direct one. If your current launch and spin are working against you — too low, too high, too much spin bleeding off ball speed — matching kick point to your tempo can put you into a better launch window and the distance follows. If your launch is already efficient, changing kick point won't manufacture yards out of nowhere. Think of it as fixing a trajectory problem, not adding horsepower.

Why this is worth knowing before you buy

If you've matched your flex correctly and you're still not seeing the launch you expected, kick point is a reasonable next place to look — not a reason to second-guess the flex chart, just the next layer down. A quick self-check:

Is your miss too high and spinny, ballooning short of where it should land? That can point to a kick point that's too low for your tempo.

Is your miss too low and flat, not climbing the way you'd expect? That can point to a kick point that's too high for your tempo.
