The honest answer is that this is one of the more approachable DIY jobs in golf — as long as you know the handful of places people actually go wrong.

Step 1: Remove the old shaft
Wrap the crown and hosel area of your driver in painter's tape to protect the finish, then clamp the clubhead (never the shaft itself) securely in the vice. Apply heat evenly around the hosel — rotate the heat gun continuously, roughly 20–30 seconds at a time, checking progress rather than blasting one spot. Once the epoxy softens, grip the shaft firmly and pull straight out with a slight twisting motion. If it doesn't move, it needs more even heat, not more force.
Step 2: Clean out the hosel completely
This is the step people rush, and it's the one that causes the most problems later. Old, hardened epoxy left inside the hosel means your new shaft won't seat to full depth — which throws off your playing length and can leave the shaft feeling loose even after it's glued. Use a hosel-cleaning tool or a small drill bit (by hand, not powered) to scrape out every bit of old epoxy, then wipe the inside clean with alcohol or acetone until a cloth comes out clean.
Step 3: Prep the new shaft tip
Lightly rough up the last inch or so of the shaft tip with sandpaper this gives the epoxy something to actually grip rather than bonding to a smooth, slick surface. Wipe it down with alcohol afterward to remove any dust or oil.

Step 4: Mix and apply the epoxy
Mix your two-part epoxy exactly to the ratio on the packaging eyeballing it is one of the more common reasons a bond fails. Apply a thin, even coat both inside the hosel and around the shaft tip. You want full coverage, not a thick glob — excess epoxy just gets pushed out (and needs wiping off) when you seat the shaft.
Step 5: Insert, align, and let it cure
Push the shaft into the hosel with a slight twisting motion until it bottoms out fully — you should feel it seat solidly. If your driver's adapter is adjustable, this is the point to set it to your intended loft and lie before the epoxy sets, not after. Wipe away any epoxy that squeezed out, stand the club so the head is level, and leave it completely undisturbed for the full cure time on your epoxy's label, usually 24 hours. Resist the urge to test-swing it early; an under-cured bond is the single most common reason a fresh install fails on the first real swing.
